The lift
The hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso can also be reached with the lift carved into the rock, a daring and amazing work that i 2010 completed the series of important renovations and safety works of the entire area on which stands the Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso built by the Province of Varese.
The work allows, particularly for elderly or disabled people, to easily overcome the 51 meters difference in height between the square of the Cascine del Quicchio and the actual entrance to the Hermitage.
The new lift, which can carry up to 12 people, is a real engineering gem.
In fact, the shaft was built by digging a well of 6 meters in diameter, 51 meters deep in the rock and connected to a 45 meters long horizontal exit tunnel to the underlying areas which opens onto the panoramic view of Lake Maggiore.
Photographs taken during the execution of the works have been placed along the gallery.
The images are accompanied by interesting technical data and curiosities that "speak" of this important work.
At the end of the tunnel, which opens directly onto the lake in the "vegetable garden" of the Hermitage complex, you will be charmed by the suggestive scenery that opens up before your eyes and in which you immediately feel immersed.
